My last night in the outer banks!

20150922_213635
Because of a storm sitting off the coast it was day two of high winds and intermittent rain. I left the Frisco campground before 8:00am with the hope of making up the miles I lost yesterday…and it worked! 21 miles later (excluding a 5 mile cirquitous ferry ride from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island) it was 3:00pm and I was in the beautiful little village of Ocracoke. I found a GREAT deal on a motel so i could dry off overnight and take the ferry to the mainland at Cedar Island tomorrow morning. That didnt stop me from grabbing dinner and making friends at Djaio, a great flatbread pizza and bat in the heart of the village (pictured above).Yankees and Phillies fans peacefully coexisting…a truly inspiring night!
Some pics from the day…

Rainy day on the Outer Banks

20150921_123206
Things were already starting to look shakey when I took this pic from inside the Cape Hateras Light House (50 mph wind gusts closed the observation deck), but then the rains did come, so I called it a day after 13 miles and hunkered down at Frisco Woods Campground (in a cabin!)

Still hoping to make it to Okrocoke tomorrow….it will just be 5 miles longer now. I’ll take the clouds, but could do without the rain☺

Killin’ the outer banks!

Finished the day in Rodanthe (25 miles). Tomorrow Avon is calling (lol), then Hatteras and the Okrocoke before hitting the mainland again at Cedar Island hopefully Wednesday.

Amazing adventure

20150919_132523From my backyard accomodations in Sandbridge (thanks mackenzie and Krista) I ventured into False Cape Park with the promise of primitive camping and unspoiled nature, and thats what I got! Not even 2 miles in I saw my first venomous snake making short work of an unsuspecting frog. Later i counted dozens of turtles and birds native to the area

After checking in with the park officers, I headed 2.5 more miles to my tent site on the beach. THOUSANDS OF ACERS, and only three campers spent the night….and none were near me☺

Tricky couples days coming up…

I am staying at a KOA Campground tonight about 8 miles south of Virginia Beach. Tomorrow i will venture into False Cape State Park for a couple days of true beach wilderness….no food no water, just lots of sand and sea. At the southern end I will, hopefully, rejoin civilization in a North Carolina beach community called Corolla. WISH ME LUCK☺
