The other half…

One of the recurring themes of my adventure is the reality that while im trying to raise awareness for MS, there are indeed other issues out there. Often when I meet people and tell them about my family’s story they will tell me about their own situations….my brother has cancer, my wife has alzheimers etc. These stories underscore for me that we all have our own crosses to bear. One of the stories that has also unfolded becore me is that of the homeless. In every city and town, and in every state I have passed through on my journey I have seen, and often interacted with homeless people. Such was the case as I passed through Cocoa Florida. Knowing that I was going to be outdoors for the night, I began scouting potential gypsy campsite locations as dusk approached. As is often the case, it didnt take long to find a vancant lot that would meet my needs for the night.

While it may not look like much to the untrained eye, to campers and homeless people this is an ideal spot. It’s close to food stores, and public bathrooms, but also wooded enough for privacy…or so I thought. After venturing into and through the maze of pathes that work into the woods (to the left of the white Styrofoam) I found a great spot to put up my tent. As I was starting the process however I was interrupted by a couple who were on their way through the woods as well. The male asked what I was doing, and before I could even get the words out he said “you can’t camp here this is our woods”. When I asked how he came to own these woods he shared that he had a deal with the owner, and that only he and his girlfriend….and another couple were aloud to live in these woods. I told him that I only intended to stay the night, and that I was heading south towards Key West in the morning. He looked to his girlfriend and she shrugged her shoulders…and then he said “well then you can stay…but only for the night, and you better be gone when I get home from work tomorrow night”.
It’s amazing to me, the shear numbers of people I have seen living on the fringes of our society over the last few months. Some are beset by circumstances often associated with mental health and/or addiction, but others have made a clear lifestyle choice. In this case it was a little of both I think as I couldnt help but notice the beer, cigarettes, and fast food they were carrying with them to their tent.
I made sure I was up early the next morning, and did not see any of my forrest residents again. I did wonder how their night went though as it rained fairly hard a couple times in the night. They were probably fine since, as is usually the case, their tents were better than mine☺

The picture above was taken just outside Providence Rhode Island back in August.

I spent Wednesday night at a motel in South Patrick Shores, and then Thursday night at a gypsy campsite on the beach in Floridana

I’ll be continuing south on the coast towards Vero Beach today, and hoping to get to Fort Pierce by Saturday.

Steamy weather, and a Christmas miracle

The last few days have been hot and humid with highs around 90 and humidity at a million percent….or maybe it just feels that way. After two nights out, I got to stay indoors on Sunday night at the Coronet Motel….the only motel in Scottsmoor. It wasn’t great but it was out of the humidity, and gave me a chance to ice my feet, which have been presenting more problems lately.

Monday was more of the same in the weather department, and as I made my way towards more the more populated areas of Mims and Titusville the prospect of two more nights outdoors began to weigh on me…and my feet were continuing to falter.

On the upside, in the worst heat of the day….through the haze, and way accrossed the highway, I saw my first sign for Miami

As I made my way through Titusville looking for a place to eat dinner I saw an Oasis on the side of the road

Even though I was planning to find a gypsy campsite for the night, the meticulously well kept exterior of the Twin Palms Motel caused me to wonder how much a room at this motel might cost….or even if a room was available since there only appeared to be a handful of rooms in the motel.
A few minutes later I was chatting with the owner Mark Wade about which “themed rooms” were available, and with a good look at me he decided that “I need a little Christmas”…and before I knew it I was staying in the Christmas room for the night!

I’ll be making my way to Coco Florida today, and then heading to the beaches again on Wednesday, but for a night at least, I enjoyed Christmas at the Twin Palms☺

Daytona Beach brings good weather, and good company!

The trek to Daytona was a bit on the wet side, but it made the arriving all the sweeter. 20151030_110450
In addition to the fantastic accomodations, i was blessed with a visit from Sam and Lynn Moyer (my aunt and uncle), who drove over to see me from “The Villages”.

After a great dinner, and wonderful evening of conversation on the boardwalk they headed back home and I drifted off to dreamland in a cozy bed.
On Friday I took a cirquitous tour of Daytona to find the post office where my 6th and final training shoes were waiting (thanks again to Bucks County Running Co.)

With a fresh pair of kicks I set off for Port Orange to meet up with Candi and Mark Procos (parents of two girls I have had the privilege to coach…Sky and Sydney.)
We met at Panheads Pizza, which was fabulous, and for the second night in a row I was surrounded with great food and great people.

After chowing down on ice cream and pizza for a couple hours, I said goodbye to the Procos family, and settled into my Gypsy campsite for the night.
I will be a bit inland, and outdoors, for the next few days as I head south around Cape Canaveral enroute to Coco Beach, but I’m well fed, have a new pair of shoes, and some great memories of the last few days to carry me through.

St Augustine, and a new friend…

After three nights in the great outdoors i was looking forward to a hot shower and a relaxing dinner, and then a dry bed at the beach in St Augustine.
In addition, I had arranged to meet with some supporters…dare I say fans? Who live a bit further north of St Augustine beach.

Meeting Ellen Wawrzyniak (pictured above), and her husband Frank, was a real treat. We enjoyed a great dinner at Salt Life Food Shack, while discussing a wide range of health related topics.
Before meeting the Wawrzyniak’s I toured historic St Augustine and marveled at beautiful architecture at every turn

After a busy day I got some laundry done and then drifted off to sleep.
Rain today and wednesday means I will likely be wet until my next indoor night’s sleep in Daytona Thursday night. The weather should clear just in time for an evening walk on the world famous Daytona Beach☺

Jacksonville and Trump….all in one day!

20151024_113730
Yep its true, i woke up in my gypsy campsite this morning and logged a brisk 12 miles to get to downtown Jacksonville in time for the circus that is the Trump campaign. Whether you love him or hate him there’s no denying he puts on a show!
The city itself was bursting with activities today with a breast cancer event, the Trump rally, as well as other event, but parking was not a problem for me 😉
…and downtown Jacksonville is beautiful!14457124494021350557550144571251307187995184
Met lots of great people here and got to talk about MS….and got interviewed by a great crew from the local ABC affiliate.
Heading south on rt1 towards St Augustine and should arrive there by Monday night….with less than 500 miles to go to get to Key West!
